Avoiding the common mistakes with hardwood sanding
Most hardwood flooring will stand repeated floor sanding, but it is easy to make mistakes that are hard to rectify. Gouging the floor and leaving ridges, not removing all the stain or not using a fine enough grit of sandpaper are all common mistakes that can be avoided if you know how to use your dust free sanding equipment properly.
Check your drum sander
Before you start work with the large drum sander, make sure you're comfortable with the way it operates. Read the instruction manual or watch an instructional video. If possible, get a hands on demonstration of the way the machine works and check that it's operating properly.
If you don't feel confident then make sure you have someone in the room with you when you start. Although you don't need to be strong to use a drum sander, they are powerful machines and can feel like they're running away with you. Try and do a practice run on a piece of scrap wood using fine sandpaper until you feel confident enough to use the machine, otherwise you can make gouges that can't be repaired.
Buy enough sandpaper
An average room will require around 10 sheets of sanding paper for the drum sander, and 10 for the edger, but always buy more and make sure you can return what you don't need. You'll need to start with a coarse grit paper that will quickly strip off the old finish and create a level surface, but will also leave very obvious scratches. These are then dealt with by using progressively finer grades of sandpaper. It's important you end your sanding with a fine enough grit of paper otherwise you'll end up with visible scratches, ridges and even old stain still on the floor.
Tips for hassle free floor sanding
• Never turn on the sander when the sandpaper is in contact with the floor - instead tilt the machine, turn on, bring into contact with the floor and then start moving immediately to avoid gouging.
• Move with the motion of the sander, backwards and forwards, always in a straight line - don't allow the sander to stop moving as you make a turn and tilt up from the floor as you finish each pass.
• Aim to sand two thirds of the floor in one direction and one third in the opposite direction, overlapping your passes to ensure that all the old finish is removed. In this way you'll achieve a professional and smooth result, ready for finishing.
